<p>A digital signature is the digital equivalent of a pen&amp;paper signature. All signature basically fall in 2 categories: RSA-Based signatures and DL-based (as e.g. Schnorr) signatures. Both are considered secure and there is no big reason to use one over the other. The patent on Schnorr-signatures is expired in 2008 and that is why it is becoming more popular now.</p>
