what are some activist communities more people should know about?
organizations like FSF, thewaterproject.org help make this world a better place with their voluntary work. What are some more such communities that more people should know about?

EFF, the regional variants of FSF such as FSFE and FSFLA, the Tor Project, I2P and maybe libera and wikipedia + the bitcoin community of course. ;)

Not entirely sure what kind of communities you're referring to but I'd include internet based communities such as the Tor Project and the Mozilla Foundation.

I think local stuff needs more support.

Support your local Tor club, your local cannabis social club, your local makersspace, your local Bitcoin meetup. In many regions there are so many local groups that could benefit from more active members (or every now and then members) and genuenly want to make the world a better place.
